Accomplishments
  • Since he entered public service, Costello has played a major role in every transportation improvement project in the region for the last 20 years.

  • As St. Clair County Board Chairman and Chairman of the Region's Council of Governments, Costello chaired the committee that made the decision to improve the Mississippi river bridges between Missouri and Illinois.

  • He chaired the Committee and cast the tie-breaking vote to bring the MetroLink mass transit system to Illinois.

  • He secured funds for the Clark Bridge in Alton, the Martin Luther King Bridge, and the McKinley Bridge and worked with the Missouri delegation to secure funding for the new Emerson Bridge in southern Illinois. Now, as a senior member of the House Transportation Committee, Costello is working to secure federal funds for a new Mississippi River Bridge crossing in the St. Louis metropolitan area.

  • Costello has brought home federal funds for the Mel Price Lock and Dam in Alton, the National Great Rivers Museum, the Lewis and Clark College Rivers Research Center and the new Lewis and Clark Interpretative Center in Hartford, Illinois.

  • He was able to get funding to complete I-255, make improvements to I-64, I-57 and money to construct numerous interchanges and new roadway improvements throughout the region.

  • Working with the new Delta Regional Authority, he has secured millions of dollars in federal funds to improve roads, bridges, highways, rail lines and mass transit systems in our area. Bringing jobs to rural communities.

  • Through the Economic Development Administration, he secured funds for improvements to the Kaskaskia Port District and to develop industrial parks in St. Clair, Randolph, Perry, Jackson, Franklin, Williamson and Pulaski counties.

  • Costello has helped secure loan and grant funds for infrastructure improvements for hundreds of projects throughout southern Illinois.

  • In spite of opposition from the Administration, he continues to bring home federal funds to make improvements to the Kaskaskia River, that serves as a vital transportation corridor for southern Illinois agriculture and commercial interests.

  • As a senior member of the US House Science Committee, he authored legislation to provide funds for research projects in advanced clean coal technologies and new alternative energy development programs. He is working hard to bring Future Gen, a power plant for the future, to southern Illinois. Future Gen will use Illinois coal in new, environmentally friendly ways.

  • With Costello's support and leadership in Congress, funds have also been made available for continuing flood, drainage, levee and environmental improvements and restoration in Randolph, Jackson, Union, Alexander and Pulaski counties.

  • Costello is a strong supporter of our nation's military. His top priority is to keep Scott Air Force Base open. In 1991, 1993, 1995 and 2005 Costello led the fight to keep Scott off the base closure list. In 1995 he was instrumental in bringing the Illinois National Guard's 126th Air Refueling Wing from Chicago to Scott, along with hundreds of new jobs.

  • Costello recently led the bi-partisan effort to provide funding to keep the C-9 aircraft flying at Scott and to continue the operations of the 932nd Air Force Reserve Wing, helping preserve one thousand jobs for our area.
